Sopot waterfall – an unexplored gem of Istria

The Sopot waterfall in Istria is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Croatia and the region. Although somewhat in the shadow of the Path of 7 Waterfalls, which tourists adore, Slap Sopot hosts more and more excursionists and tourists every year. We can say that the beautiful Slap Sopot is still a somewhat unexplored jewel of Istria, waiting for you to discover it. If you set out to explore the Sopot Waterfall in Istria, we are sure that you will be delighted by the beautiful waterfall and the magical landscape. Located not far from Pazin, in Floričići – the Sopot Istra waterfall is surrounded by untouched nature, beautiful viewpoints and protected plant and animal species.

The sumptuous waterfall is as high as 25 meters, and the waterfall is created thanks to the Švić stream (which can dry up in the dry summer months). Therefore, the best time to visit the waterfall is spring, autumn or winter. Near the waterfall there is also an attractive multi-century bridge that was built during the Napoleonic era, and at the bottom of the Sopot waterfall, a magical turquoise lake is created, as if created for wonderful photos.

Sopot waterfall – an immense experience of beautiful viewpoints

You can reach Sopot Falls in three different ways: on foot along the St. Šimuna, on foot along the Path of St. Roka or by car to Floričići. Arriving by car is actually the worst option, because driving by car will miss out on all the beauty of the surroundings of Sopot Waterfall. Beautiful hiking trails of St. Simon and St. Rocks are a great way to blend in with nature. Walking along the trails is not demanding, and provides an immense experience of beautiful viewpoints that show the full charm of picturesque Istria. The nature near the beautiful waterfall is extremely well preserved, as evidenced by the presence of rare protected animals in this area. Attractive hills made of solid limestone and river valleys made of marl – will show you all the splendor of nature in Istria. If you want to enjoy every step, away from the city and business stress – definitely go on foot along the Sopot Falls in Istria.

Choose the attractive Path of St. Šimuna in Istria

Path of St. Šimuna (Trail 701) is one of the most beautiful hiking-mountaineering trails in Istria and Croatia. In addition to numerous beautiful viewpoints that will leave you breathless (because of the beauty), the path in the central part also leads to the attractive Sopot Waterfall. An attractive path is one of three ways to reach the desired Istrian waterfall. Circular path of St. Šimuna starts and ends in Gračišće, where after the walk you can eat excellent Istrian dishes. The trail is 8.9 kilometers long and you will need a little more than 3 and a half hours to complete it. The track is not demanding and can be used by people without a high fitness level.

Path of St. Šimuna will guide you through beautiful natural sights, and you will surely enjoy the wonderful view of magical Istria. On the way, you will pass by several beautiful churches, but also get to know the partial history of the Istrian region. The path of St. Šimuna is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to walk to the waterfall and breathe in plenty of fresh air. Do not visit the trail during the hottest hours, but in the late afternoon when the sun is no longer strong.

Want an easier trail? There is the Path of St. Deadline

Unlike the long Path of St. Šimuna (701), Path of St. Roka (702) is almost half as short and easier to master. This path was designed precisely to bring you to the Sopot Waterfall itself. Anyone with at least a little fitness should be able to overcome this path without any problems, but it is necessary to avoid the hot summer hours for walking. The St. Rok Trail (Trail 702) starts in the town of Pićan and leads you straight to the Sopot Waterfall. The trail is only 3.5 kilometers long and is characterized as easy, which means that almost everyone can overcome it. The difference in height is less than 100 meters, and to overcome the Path of St. You will only need 1 hour.

Path of St. Roka takes you through the beautiful landscape of the Istrian region, and on the way to the waterfall you will enjoy various interesting scenes. Particularly attractive is the Viewpoint of St. Jelene, from which there is a wonderful view of the Istrian mountain Učka. Also, on the way, you will meet Stijena, the fairy builder, who is believed to have turned out to be fairies when they were building the Pula Arena. The final goal is certainly the beautiful Sopot Waterfall.

Centuries-old bridge – enjoy a wonderful scene that remains in your memory

The Sopot waterfall in itself is a wonderful natural phenomenon that delights tourists and visitors with its appearance. However, a special charm is added to the beautiful waterfall by the attractive Centennial Bridge, which is located right above the waterfall. The merging of the Centennial Bridge and the Sopot waterfall creates a truly wonderful scene that will remain in your memory forever. The centuries-old bridge was built long ago, during the reign of Napoleon. This attractive bridge was the main link between the surrounding villages and the town of Pićan and throughout history played an important role for the locals. Interestingly, the bridge was quite damaged by water on several occasions, but the locals regularly restored it. The last restoration of the Centennial Bridge was in 1953.

Enjoy the enchanting, turquoise lake

The environment in which the Sopot waterfall is located is extremely interesting and attractive. The high rocks that form a kind of protection for the waterfall and the lake blend in with the rest of the preserved environment and the interesting multi-storied bridge. The whole scene really looks cinematic and we are sure you will be delighted. The wonderful turquoise lake into which the waterfall flows gives a special charm to the whole experience. The water falling from a height of 25 meters collects in a stone trough under the waterfall and creates a wonderful turquoise ambience. Because of all this, the Sopot waterfall looks enchanting from all sides and positions.

Explore two beautiful viewpoints

There are two attractive viewpoints next to the waterfall itself. The first viewpoint is located right above the waterfall itself and is dedicated to the Old Slavonic god Perun, who was the ruler of the sky. The second viewpoint is dedicated to his wife Mokoš, goddess of fertility and protector of women. Of course, interesting historical stories are also connected with all of the above, which you can learn from local residents.

The second lookout point is on the way from the top of the waterfall to the lake, so you’ll have to make a little effort if you want to reach that lookout point. The path leading to the lake is quite steep, so you need to be extremely careful. Fortunately, ropes have been installed to help descend towards the lake, so you still have an extra level of safety. In any case, be careful as you descend to the turquoise lake at the foot of the Sopot waterfall.

When to visit Slap Sopot in Istria?

The Sopot waterfall in Istria is best visited in spring, autumn or winter. Namely, in the dry summer months, there may not even be a waterfall due to lack of water, so it is better to avoid such a scenario. What should also be avoided is visiting the waterfall at noon when the sun is too strong for walks. The best way to go to Sopot Waterfall is in the late afternoon, when it’s not too hot. No matter which way you choose to travel to the waterfall, we advise you to wear suitable hiking clothes and shoes. Quality shoes will protect you from injuries, while long pants will prevent unwanted punctures and skin damage.
